George ‘Duke’ Henry Anderson III
George “Duke” Henry Anderson III died April 12, 2004, at his home in Italy at the age of 42.
Born on Kaua‘i Feb. 18, 1962, Duke most recently worked as a heavy equipment operator, until his move to Italy five years ago. As a teen he worked with his father and by the age of 18 was an accomplished carpenter as well as backhoe operator. He had also worked for Blackwell Construction, Loni Ford-General Contractor and been co-owner of Malama Ka Wai. Duke was a “jack of all trades,” knowledgeable in plumbing, electrical wiring and auto mechanics. He had a wide range of interests including soccer, basketball, pool, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed the rodeo and most often wore a black cowboy hat and boots.
He is survived by his parents: George and Irene Anderson of Hanalei; his wife: Sabina Padula Anderson of Italy; two daughters: Mia and Marcianna Anderson of the island of Hawai‘i; three brothers: David Anderson of Kapa‘a, Jonathan Anderson of Lihu‘e, and Daniel Anderson of Hanalei; three sisters: Naomi Jensen of California, Leah McCormick of Kapa‘a, and Rebekah Staggs of Oklahoma; eight nephews and six nieces.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 2, at the Hanalei School cafeteria starting at 12:30 p.m. For more information, contact Leah McCormick at 823-9098.
Francisco Baniaga
Francisco Ramos Baniaga of Kaumakani, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on April 26, 2004, at the age of 94.
Born in Dingras, Philippines on April 1, 1910, he was a retired irrigator with Olokele Sugar Company.
He is survived by two brothers, Lauro and Emilio Baniaga, both of the Philippines; three sisters, Frances Gallegos of Waipahu, O‘ahu, Helen Ramos of Waipahu, O‘ahu and Pacita Alonzo of the Philippines; two sisters-in-law, Connie Baniaga and Angelina Baniaga; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004 at West Kauai United Methodist Church in Kaumakani; service to begin at 11 a.m.; cremation to follow.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Bernard Almeida Sr.
Bernard Almeida Sr., of Koloa, died at his residence on April 25, 2004 at the age of 75.
Born in Honolulu, O‘ahu on Aug. 28, 1928, he was a supervisor with Hawaiian Telephone Company.
He is survived by his wife, Tomiko “Bobbie” Almeida; three sons, Bernard Almeida Jr., of Koloa, Matthew (Georgette) Almeida of Honolulu and Bertram (Christy) Almeida of Koloa; two daughters, Cheryl (Kalei) Van Geison of Lawa‘i and Maria (Kea) Kanealii of Anahola; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Julianna Fratecelli of O‘ahu and Lillian Harris of Guam. Private services will be held at a later date.

William Hesse
William Hesse of Lihu‘e, formerly of Grand Rapids, Mich., died on April 18, 2004, at the age of 50.
Born July 17, 1953 to William and Phyllis Hesse in Grand Rapids, he graduated from the University of Michigan, and worked in the family business, Carpets by Hesse, Inc.
In 1993, he moved to Hawai‘i and established Hesse Carpets and eventually Wild Bill’s Restaurant featuring Wild Bill’s Gourmet Coffee.
He is survived by two children, Kristen and Billy, mother Phyllis, sisters Pam, Chris and Amy, brothers, Paul and Richard and 10 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 9 a.m. A reception will follow the service. Casual attire is suggested.
