Dr. Maila Coleman, a pediatrician practicing at the West Kauai Medical Center at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea, is the first baby doctor in the state certified as a pediatric life-support instructor.
And she immediately began sharing her new knowledge, teaching a class to physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel in the latest techniques of newborn safety and first aid.
Coleman is the first pediatrician in Hawai‘i to be certified as a pediatric advanced life support instructor.
She has been actively working with professionals at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children on O‘ahu to ensure safe optimal transport of critically ill children from Kaua‘i who need to be flown to O‘ahu for urgent care.
Cheryl Tennberg, a registered nurse at the facility, also recently completed the instructors’ course in neonatal resuscitation.
More information about upcoming classes in pediatric advanced life support is available by calling Steve Cull, 338-9431.
Hospital contractors also recently remodeled the facility’s Family Birth Center, where newborn babies and their mothers stay together after birth. Tours of the center are available by calling the center, 338-9441.
