Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a championships this Sunday
The Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a 2004 Kaua‘i Island Championships will take place this Sunday, Apr. 18 as throngs of paddlers in both one-man and two-man canoes and surf ski will race along 20-plus miles of Kaua‘i shoreline for the 2004 title.
Spectators are invited to watch the excitement between the starting points and finish line at the Port Allen Fishing Club.
Because of the length of the race, registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Kalapaki Bay behind JJ’s Broiler for the long course which will run from Kalapaki Bay to the Port Allen Fishing Club starting at 10 a.m.
The short course will begin at the Waiohai in Po‘ipu and paddlers will race to the Port Allen Fishing Club finish line. Start time for the short course is 11 a.m.
The event is being sponsored by Starbucks.
Pu‘uwai Children’s program starts Tuesday in Wailua
The Pu‘uwai Canoe Club Spring Children’s Program will hold registration and information distribution on Tuesday, Apr. 20 at the Wailua River starting at 3:30 p.m.
All young people from 12 to 18 years of age is invited to attend the club’s first day of the program.
For those who are unable to attend Tuesday, the club will be at the river on Wednesday as well.

Kapa‘a Pop Warner to unveil 2004 plans Apr. 21
The Kapa‘a Pop Warner Association will be hosting a general membership meeting on Apr. 21 at the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center starting at 7 p.m. where they will offer a preview of the upcoming 2004 season.
Registration started on Apr. 6 and will continue through June 1 from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kapa‘a Ball Park.
Youth aged from 8 to 15 years are invited to join the program involving tackle football and cheerleading in three divisions — the Junior PeeWee, PeeWee, and Midget.

Deadline for U.S. Open qualifiers coming up
April 28 is the deadline for entries to the U.S. Open Local Qualifiers which will be held on May 18 at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course for Kaua‘i. Other qualifiers will be held on May 15 at the Ka‘anapali Golf Course on Maui, and on May 20 at the Turtle Bay Resort on O‘ahu.
The U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier will be played on June 7 at the Turtle Bay Resort.
For the first time in history, Hawai‘i will hold three local qualifiers as well as the first sectional qualifier in Hawai‘i so golfers wishing to qualify for the U.S. Open Championships do not have to fly to the mainland to qualify for the event.
Any golfer with a Handicap Index of 1.4 or below qualifies to enter any of the qualifiers with entry forms available online at www.usga.org, or by contacting the HSGA office at (808) 589-2909.
