The Waimea High School boys tennis team edged Kapa‘a, 3-2 in closely-contested matches played Saturday at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts.
Jeffrey Kakuda and David Honma beat Tayler Alfiler and Whitney Haraguchi of Kapa‘a, 6-3, 7-5 in the second doubles, and Menehune Scott Lopez and Donovan Manguba-Glover took Bryson Toda and Martin Antonio, 7-5, 6-1 in the third doubles to give the Menehune an early 2-0 lead.
But, Kapa‘a answered as Justin Vea defeated Joseph Mecham, 6-1, 6-2 to capture the first singles for Kapa‘a, and Kia Tom teamed with Waylen Sadang to continue the Warriors’ win streak with a victory over Bryan Hayashi and Peterson Dela Cruz, Jr. to earn the first doubles behind a 6-2, 6-1 score.
Menehune Kollin Morikawa took the decider, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 against Justin Nagai for the second singles and the tie breaking match.
As in the regulation matches, the Menehune split their consolation matches with Kapa‘a as Jake Anderson teamed with Jonah Farias to take Kapa‘a’s Koa Yama and Cory Sokei, 8-3, and Kapa‘a’s Shem Greenleaf and Chris Ramelb downed Jonathan Manguba-Glover and Kale Nakata, 3-8.
Waimea draws the bye this weekend as the KIF enters its final two weekends of play with Kapa‘a hosting the Kaua‘i Red Raiders at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts starting at noon on Saturday, Apr. 17.
The second matches on Apr. 17 will have Island School traveling to Princeville to take on Kula High School.
On Apr. 24 Waimea will host Kula at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts, and Island School will host Kaua‘i at Kiahuna.
The KIF qualifying matches will take place Apr. 29-30 at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
Correction
In the Monday issue of TGI, the Kula High School boys tennis team was incorrectly reported as winning only one match against Kaua‘i High who was reported as winning 4-1.
Kaua‘i boys won, 3-2 with Kula winning two matches, the boys second singles, and Makai Ferry and Matt Vinsko winning the third doubles, 6-4, 6-4.
