Longboard contest on Maui
LAHAINA, Maui — The 27th annual Kimo’s Longboard Contest is close at hand with the holding dates beginning Apr. 20 through Aug. 20. This year’s competition will be held at Maui’s Mala Wharf.
Approximately fifty longboard surfers are expected to turn out for the 20-minute heats of the double-elimination amateur contest following last year’s turnout of 60 competitors — the largest field in the history of the contest. The contest winner will receive a new Ole “Bumble Bee” surfboard, dinner for four at Kimo’s, and other donated prizes. The six remaining place finishers will receive a variety of amazing sponsored prizes and trophies.
Surfboards are required to be nine to eleven feet, single fin, and no surf leases. A panel of five judges will evaluate the competitors on a combination of nostalgic and progressive longboarding moves including Hang 10, Cheater 5s, Thin-first take-offs, Helicopter 360, and Drop-knee turns.
Contest entry fees are $25 (pre-entry), and $30 (day-of beach entry). Beach entries are not guaranteed. To receive an aplication, or for more information, call the contest hotline at (808) 669-8218.
