A local man allegedly struck a male visitor from Alaska with a hammer at ‘Anini Beach Park early yesterday morning.
Kaua‘i Police Department detectives are looking for a local man, described by his alleged assault victim as 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing between 135 pounds and 145 pounds with a slim build and black, medium-length hair in a bowl cut.
According to KPD detectives, the 21-year-old male and his companion, an 18-year-old woman, also from Alaska, were camping at ‘Anini Beach Park, when they were awoken by a local male who apparently entered their tent, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
After being told to leave, Ozaki said, the intruder left, but returned 45 minutes to an hour later, about 2:15 a.m., and reportedly struck the man twice on the head with a hammer.
The victim was able to get the hammer away from the suspect, and was taken by the female to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Nothing was taken from the tent, and the visitors had camping permits, Ozaki said.
KPD detectives are also searching for a vehicle that may be connected to the assault, a white 2002 or 2003 Dodge Neon with black surf racks. A vehicle fitting that description was seen flanked by a police officer on Kuhio Highway near the entrance to the Radisson at 7 p.m. Monday.
It was not immediately known whether or not the suspect is camping at the county beach park.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact KPD Lt. Regina Ventura, 241-1680, or Det. Joseph Adric, 241-1681.
