Hawai‘i State Junior golf Association member Natalie Nakamine fired an 81-83 to take first place in the Girls 11-14 age division in the International Junior Golf Tour’s tournament at the University of New Mexico on Mar. 27-28. The 36-hole stroke play at the university’s par 72 Championship Course was Nakamine’s first tournament outside the state of Hawai‘i. The victory earned her an invitation to the IJGT’s Tournament of Champions at the Grand Cypress Resort in Florida in May.
Entry into the Tour series is normally based on resumes, but the HSJGA had secured two exemptions from the National Minority Golf Foundation into the event. The awarding of the exemptions to this and other tournaments is based on JSJGA’s tournament point standings. The boy exemption went to Noel Torres who shot an 83-86 for a 38th place finish in the Boys 13-19 years age division.
Nikko Tacsiat and Kelcie Ann Kawano competed on Mar. 20-21 in the IJGT’s tournament at Barona Creek Golf Club in San Diego under two other exemptions. Tacsiat shot an 86-89 to place 20th in the Boys 13-15 division while Kawano fired an 85-83 to place fifth in the Girls 14 and younger division.
Elyse Okada and Jonathan Khil were exempted into the IJGT’s Harbour Town Links at Hilton Head in January with Okada’s 82-85 placing her in fifth place in the Girls 19 and younger division and Khil’s 77-83 earning him 10th place in the boys 13-15 division.
