LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i pitcher Jake Oketani picked up his first win of the 2004 KIF baseball season as he shared the mound with Garen Itamura to lead the Red Raiders to an 11-1 win Wednesday at Vidinha Stadium.
Oketani allowed the sole Kapa‘a run that came in the third inning, and between himself and Itamura, held the Warriors to just five hits in the outing that ended in the sixth inning on the 10-run ruling.
Ashkon Kuhaulua chalked up an RBI as he drove in Moses Punzal who got on base on a single in the third.
Kaua‘i bats ignited in the fifth inning as Shannon Oketani and Shawn Ogata each drove in a pair of RBI in the five-run inning for Kaua‘i. The Raiders finished the day with 10 hits for their 11 runs.
Kuhaulua, who picked up the pitching duties from Punzal in the fifth inning, started off on the wrong foot as he hit the first two Kaua‘i batters in the bottom of the sixth inning. Davis Murata went to the box as a pinch hitter, and a hit to third base coupled with an error got Murata to first safely, with the lead-off runner scoring to end the contest 11-1.
Earlier in the game, Kaua‘i capitalized on Warrior miscues to open the scorebooks, their first two runs coming in the opening frame on a passed ball combining with a Kapa‘a error to score two Red Raider runs as Titus Hori, walking to first, and courtesy runner Stanton Yoshimori, running for Jake Oketani’s single, crossing the plate.
Kelsey Furuike drove Sam Dias across the plate in the second frame, Dias tripling to get on base.
Following the Kapa‘a run, Kaua‘i continued to score on Warrior miscues as Kirby Yates hit into Lopez who tumbled to the ground on the play, the toss to firstbase getting past Punzal to score Itamura and advancing Yates all the way to third base in the third inning, Yates coming home on a Dias RBI.
Kai Lopez, who was relieved in the fifth inning by Punzal suffered the loss for Kapa‘a.
