With an aggressive goal of raising $150,000 for this year’s Kaua‘i Visitor Industry Charity Walk, event organizers with the Kaua‘i chapter of the Hawaii Hotel Association have scheduled a fund-raiser a month leading up to the May walk.
“The calendar of events provides several fund-raising opportunities to ensure we exceed out goal,” said event chairperson Simon Jongert, general manager of the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.
The first event was a big success, he said. The Buy a Bachelor fund-raiser held at the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa in Po‘ipu last month raised over $12,000.
A bowling tournament was held yesterday, Saturday, March 27. The results of that fund-raiser were not available by presstime.
An island-wide car wash is planned for Saturday, April 17, with Charity Walk recruit chairpersons planning events at Waimea, Po‘ipu, Lihu‘e and Princeville.
For more information on the car washes, or to join the walk, please contact Sandy Kato-Klutke at 742-7424. The general manager of Aston at Poipu Kai is recruitment chair.
The Kaua‘i Visitor Industry Charity Walk, set for Saturday, May 15, is the largest single-day fund-raiser the island witnesses on an annual basis, with all the funds donated to the island’s charitable, nonprofit help agencies.
Over 2,000 walkers are expected.
This year’s route starts and ends at the historic County Building on Rice Street in Lihu‘e, a departure from the last several years, when the walk started and ended at Kukui Grove Center park and pavilion.
Members of the Hawaii Hotel Association Kaua‘i chapter are excited about this year’s activities.
“Please join us,” Jongert said.
Kelly Hoen, general manager of the Princeville Resort, is HHA-Kaua‘i chapter president, and in charge of publicity for the events. Deborah Baker is working with the island’s charitable organizations.
Wayne Yoshihara is in charge of the finance committee, and Kaupena Kinimaka, director of loss prevention at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, is in charge of safety and the walk route.
Other representatives of various other visitor-industry businesses on the island have been assigned to other committees.
