At about 4 p.m. Monday, a man wanted for outstanding bench warrants led at least five Kaua‘i Police Department vehicles on a chase through rush-hour traffic in downtown Lihu‘e.
According to Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer, KPD officials received an anonymous tip that a man wanted for outstanding bench warrants was in Hanama‘ulu. Officers responded, and found the man in a vehicle.
When they tried to pull the man over, he took off through residential Hanama‘ulu, came back onto Kuhio Highway, and raced through downtown Lihu‘e.
Police called off the chase near Halfway Bridge west of Puhi for safety reasons, Ozaki said.
“They felt it was not worth risking the safety of those on the road” for a man that will be caught in the near future, Ozaki said.
