Red Raider cheer finishes fifth
The Kaua‘i High School Cheerleading squad under the direction of coaches Carrie Naka‘ahiki Young and Todd Young finished the HHSAA/Zippy’s 2004 State Cheerleading Championships in fifth place in the Large Division (12-18 members) over the weekend at the Stan Sheriff Center on O`ahu.
The KIF champion cheer squad bested sixth place Punahou by just three and a half points, and were six points shy of fourth place Ai‘ea in the standings.
Kamehameha, who recently earned their second straight national title in Florida, topped the Large Division competition with a total of 275 points.
The Red Raiders earned 222 points for their performance.
Moanalua topped the Medium Division (11-or fewer members) with 262 points followed by Mililani who finished at 243 points.
Gerard nets game-high points in 14U
Damien Gerard netted 13 points to lead the Puhi Rebels to a 55-35 win over the Kalaheo Pistons in the county’s 14 Under boys basketball league games played Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Kea Lopez was high pointer for the Pistons with nine points.
Basil Walton and David Mendes each finished with 14 points as Walton led the Lihu‘e Breakaway to a 56-28 victory over Wailua, Mendes leading the boys in green.
Vincent Vea and Tyler Hadley each ended the day with nine points in the final game of the day as Vea led the Westside Hornets to a 48-27 showing over Kilauea who was led by Hadley.
Off-road Poker Ride coming Apr. 4
Kaua‘i’s Off-Road Riders, a non-profit organization, will be holding an off-road motorcycle Poker Run event on Sunday, Apr. 4 at Camp 1 Bay in Port Allen.
Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. with the event getting under way at 10 a.m.
There will be classes for all riders.
Off-road motorcyclists, quads, mini bikes, and mountain bikes are welcomed.
Participants should bring two gas containers.
