NAWILIWILI — A crowd of well over 3,000 curious Kaua‘i residents and island visitors showed up Sunday afternoon for a look at a prototype of a Hawai‘i inter-island ferry.
Questions repeatedly poised to the businesspeople behind the Hawaii SuperFerry who were onboard the Spirit of Ontario docked at Pier 1 included:
“How much will it cost to go to Honolulu?”
“How soon can you start service?”
“Can I bring my car?”
Terry White, the chief operating officer of Honolulu-based Hawaii Superferry, said the turnout at Nawiliwili was “overwhelming.”
He said a good turnout was expected on Kaua‘i following a stop Friday and Saturday in Honolulu, but nothing like the numbers of people who lined up along the dockside here.
White said the company sees the Neighbor Islands benefiting most from the inter-island ferry operation that’s scheduled to start service around Thanksgiving in 2006.
He said its expected that Neighbor Island residents on pleasure trips will make up the bulk of the passengers, and that the ferry would attract a market that’s mostly underserved by inter-island airlines, allowing more visits to Honolulu and other islands for Kauaians who normally don’t fly to Honolulu and other islands.
