Raymond Balai of Kapa‘a, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 21, 2004 at the age of 65.
Born in Hilo, Hawai‘i on Nov. 20, 1938, he was an equipment operator with Lihu‘e Plantation.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Brede) Balai; six sons, Thomas Balai of Kapa‘a, Hoanostakio Balai of Kapa‘a, Gilbert (Julieann) Balai Sr., of Anahola, Brady Balai of Honolulu, Joseph Balai of Honolulu and Earl (Tina) Balai Sr. of Kapa‘a; two daughters, Merlayne I. Low of Kapa‘a and Antoinette Balai of Honolulu; three brothers, Ismael (Bessy) Balai of Volcano, Hawai‘i, James Balai of Honolulu and Joseph Pinero of Honolulu; three sisters, Margaret (Richard) Tangaro of Reno Nev., Frances (Mar) Murillo of Honolulu and Tina (Lawrence) Alamoot of Honolulu; in-laws, William A. Jr. and Juliette Brede of Anahola, 20 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 6 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kapa‘a Ward; service officiated by Bishop Ron Lee Velasco will begin at 11 a.m. Followed by burial at Kapa‘a Public Cemetery. Casual attire is suggested.

Velma K. Caycayon of Hanama‘ulu, died March 4, 2004 at Wilcox Hospital at age 68.
Born Oct. 9, 1935 in Honolulu, O‘ahu, she worked in sales.
She is survived by her husband: Patricio Caycayon of Hanama‘ulu; four sons: Gerald (Nati) Ganaban of Wa‘ianae, O‘ahu, Roger (Pat) Ganaban of Makakilo, O‘ahu, Patrick “Skip” (Noreen) Caycayon of Hanama‘ulu; Jerry “Sonny” (Iris) Caycayon of Anahola; four daughters: Linda (Gilbert) Miles of Antioch, Calif.; Ruth (Sa’le) Caycayon-Potts of Kekaha; Patricia Caycayon of Pittsberg, Calif., and Ardella Arrington of Pittsberg, Calif.; father, Jacob P. (Ana) Kaleikini, Sr. of O‘ahu; brothers and sisters, Alfredo Franco of Big Island, Emma (William) Ernestburg of of O‘ahu, Kuuipoaloha Hurst of California, Violet (Jim) Hawkins of O‘ahu, James Young and Hope Kaleikini of O‘ahu; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Monday, March 8, at the Lihu‘e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick/Kaua‘i Mortuary.
Mary Bal
Mary Nyuen Lung Bal of Kekaha, Kaua‘i, died March 2, 2004, at the age of 93.
Born in Kilauea, Kaua‘i, on June 5, 1910, she was a teacher with the Department of Education.
She is survived by one son, Edward (Diana) Bal of Acampo, Calif. and one hanai son, Norman (Kiyomi) Lung of Los Angeles, Calif., two daughters, Leimomi (William) Crowell of Kekaha, and Janet Kahaunani Landfried of Redlands, Calif.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kekaha on Monday, March 8. Burial will be held at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Carl K. Nishiie
Carl K. Nishiie of Kilauea died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Feb. 27, 2004, at the age of 48.
Born Dec. 27, 1955, in Lihu‘e, he was a part-time landscaper for various landscaping companies.
He is survived by his father, Kazume Nishiie, and stepmother, Calia Nishiie; one brother, Roy Nishiie; uncles, aunts and cousins.
Friends may call Wednesday, March 10, from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at St. Sylvester Catholic Church where Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested.
