WAIMEA — “They’re leading Punahou,” an excited fan said as the clock ticked down to the first half.
Working the depth of their squad, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter behind four points from forward Sheri Gebauer, and followed that with a 16-13 second quarter led by guard Ulu Kelekoma who plucked a trey in their five-point effort, Gebauer fueling the drive with three points as the Lady Raiders took a 28-23 lead into the locker rooms enroute to a 65-49 victory over Punahou II.
Holly Iloreta, held to just four first-half buckets, erupted for 14 second half markers to lead the Lady Raiders with a game-high 18 points in the win, Gebauer finishing with 15 points.
Lindsay Sugihara bulled her way for 10 points in the win followed by Kelekoma ending with nine points.
Farren Higley, although held for just a pair in the win, was key as she and Gebauer controlled the boards restricting the Pun II’s to single shot efforts.
Kim Hu, Kelli Shishido, and Lori Wakamoto each finished with eight points to lead Punahou II.
The Lady Raider victory gives them a double-win in the Lady Menehune Basketball Tournament while each of the other participating teams each have a loss, Waimea dropping the evening finale, 47-30 to the Lady Bulldogs of Waialua.
Kira Nakasone notched a game-high 21 points to lead Waialua, firing a pair of treys and a field goal to lead the Bulldogs to a 12-5 first quarter.
However, the Menehune clawed back in the second quarter to chase three points as the clock ticked towards the half.
Turnovers proved to be the downfall of the Lady Menehune who gave up six quick points as the buzzer sounded on a 24-15 reading enroute to Waialua sealing Waimea’s fate, 47-30.
Ashley Mier led Waimea with nine points with Janna Soto contributing eight points in the loss. Malorie Hepa finished with four, and Chantelle Briones, Tiana Samio, Joanna Jacinto, and Hoku Magno each finished with a pair.
