Hanalei Canoe Club will begin its 31st season on March 1, 2004. We look forward to a fulfilling and exciting year, and invite all interested paddlers to join us for a fun and challenging season.
We gather our strength and spirit from a long history of family dedication, community involvement, reverence for the Hawaiian culture, and a commitment to sharing the sport of outrigger canoe paddling with all members of Kaua‘i’s community.
Our vision is to perpetuate the Hawaiian Culture through outrigger canoe paddling. We observe ceremonies of Hawaiian pule and protocols, perpetuate Hawaiian traditions in canoe rigging and racing, and offer a Hawaiian language class. We are also dedicated to community service, so that we may continue to give back to the community that has supported our club for generations.
At the core of our club is our Youth Paddling Program, with over 90 young people from ages 8 to 18 participating. Through this program, these boys and girls improve their self-esteem, and learn teamwork and other life skills that will serve them for a lifetime. The Hanalei Youth Paddlers are our focus and our future.
We delight in our tutus, as athletes ages 60+ who paddle for physical activity, enjoyment, companionship and competition. They enrich our lives by being role models, and by sharing with us their life wisdom and joy in activities.
In our hearts, we carry a much broader view of outrigger paddling as a vessel for culture, family and community. We are focused on building a strong foundation, based on respect for each individual. We are also seriously competitive, employing the latest in paddling techniques and state of the art equipment. We offer the use of a full gym and access to one-man canoes. Hanalei Canoe Club has won the Garden Island Championships for the past 30 years, and we will continue to be an elite force in our paddling community, both in regattas and in long distance canoe racing.
Hanalei Canoe Club will be offering practice sites this season on the east side of Kaua‘i, for those in our community who are unable to commute to the North Shore but wish to be members. Time and location for east side practices will be announced.
Men’s practices in Hanalei are Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. Women’s practices in Hanalei are Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. A Monday practice will be added on March 1st.
Youth practice will begin in March, and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Time to be announced. There is also a group that paddles at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
