West Kaua‘i celebrated Valentine’s Day with a sweep Saturday, taking both of their games at the ‘Ele‘ele Ball Park.
The Rookies were the first victim, 9-6, followed by a WK win over K-Makule, 8-6.
West Kaua‘i 9, Rookies 6
Hank Nishikawa drew first blood for the Rookies, scoring on a double by Mike Folster with two away, but WK answered with a pair of runs on hits from Daniel Manus, Frank Bukoski, Larry Ephan, Bernard Mahuiki, and John Patt.
Manuel Pacheco answered back for the Rookies with an RBI hit in the second as the league’s defending champions opened up with three runs in the third and a final run in the fourth before WK bats answered.
WK’s Bukoski, Ephan, Mahuiki, and Patt drove in three runs in the third, and added a pair in the fifth on hits from Manus, Bukoski, Mahuiki, and Braddah Rittmeister.
Folster, Pacheco were 2-for-3 to lead the Rookies’ bats with Ray Espino and Stan Dela Cruz finishing 3-for-4.
Manus, Ephan, and Patt, all finishing 2-for-3, led the WK lumbermill with Bukoski and Mahuiki going a perfect 3-for-3, Ephan and Manus finishing with homeruns under their belts. Ephan ended the day with two HR’s, one a solo shot, and the other with a runner aboard.
Junior Riveira picked up the win for WK on the hill while Wally Sonoda suffered the loss.
West Kaua‘i 8, K-Makule 6
A five-run fifth inning pushed WK into the winner’s circle as K-Makule could only muster a run in the seventh as they fell 8-6 to the hosting WK team.
Lefty Remata and Guy Ruiz led K-Makule with 3-for-3 showings in the batting box while Larry Ephan and Pat Pavao were also 3-for-3 for WK. Daniel Manus finished 2-for-3.
Dado Paiste suffered the loss for K-Makule with Joe Silva picking up the win for WK.
K-Makule opened with three runs on hits by Lefty Remata, Doric Remata, Ruiz, and a sac fly from Danny Smith with WK answering with just two runs on hits from Manus, Bukoski, Ephan, and Rittmeister.
But, the 1-run lead was short-lived as WK came back with five runs in the third, and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Lihu‘e A’s 15, Kuku’s Aces 1
Joe Brun picked up the win for Lihu‘e A’s who were declared TKO winners, Kuku’s Aces scoring their only run in the bottom of the sixth as Tada Hashimoto crossed on a hit by Kuku DeCosta.
Lihu‘e opened with five runs followed by a run in the fifth, and a back-breaking four runs in the sixth.
Randy Tomlinson whacked a homerun in the sixth to lead the Lihu‘e bats with Tomoo Hiranaka and Glenn Akina finishing 3-for-5. Tomlinson and Shigeo Oshiro followed with 2-for-4 showings.
The Aces were led by Ernest Dela Cruz, Kaleo Furtado, Americo Morris, Hashimoto, and Solomon Reyes who finished 1-for-2 with Morris suffering the loss on the hill.
Kawaihau 14, East Kaua‘i 2
Kawaihau broke a 0-0 stalemate in the third inning with three runs off an East Kaua`i error, and followed that with seven runs in the fourth enroute to a 14-2 TKO over EK.
Les Kubo, Al Salvador, and Norman Holt finished 1-for-2 to lead the EK bats while Ron Alfonso finished 2-for-2 to lead Kawaihau who got help from Jack Lucas, Bob Herman, and Teddy Daligdig each ending the day 1-for-2.
Jerome Hew suffered the loss with Ken Tamashiro picking up the Kawaihau win on the mound.
Saturday’s games move to the Kaumakani Ball Park with the first game starting at 9 a.m.
