Micah Ulugalu fired two goals to lead Dr. Burnison’s Hot Shots in the Squirt division as they downed the Papaya’s Piranhas, 6-2, and tied the North Shore Custom Floor Flyers, 33 as the YMCA Roller Hockey League opened its 2004 season at the Kapa‘a rink over the weekend.
Chase Koulbanis and Kawai Peahu helped the Hot Shots’ efforts with a goal and an assist each. Dylan Myerson and Zachary Rodrigues notched goals for the Piranhas while Keaton Duncon racked up a pair of goals and an assist for the Flyers.
Ikaika Fuerte paced the Allstate Insurance Rangers to a double win in the Bantam division, the Rangers taking the Hesse Flooring Menehune, 9-6 before downing the Kama‘aina Kreations Sharks, 10-5.
Fuerte finished with six goals and an assist with Tyler Dora contributing five goals and an assist. Keala Davis rounded out the Rangers’ efforts with five goals.
Travis Shigeta notched two goals and an assist for the Menehune. Noah Murray led up the Sharks attack with four goals and an assist.
Ty Akama led the Punua Insurance Na Ali‘i who split their Midget division games, getting avoe the Southpaw Board Bangers, 11-4, but suffering a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Sleeping Giants.
Akama finished the day with six goals and two assists with Ryan Shimanuki contributing four goals and three assists for Na Ali‘i.
Hatch Benners scored a pair of goals to lead the Board Bangers, and Shane Shimanuki led the Giants’ victory with two goals and a pair of assists.
Chase Engel helped the Giants with a goal and two assists with Garren Venzon firing a pair of scores.
Of note was the outstanding goalie play of the Giants’ Alohi Costa who finished with a sizzling 41 saves.
The YMCA Roller Hockey League hosts three teams in three age divisions, the Squirt (11 years and Under), the Bantam (12 to 14 years), and the Midget (15 to 17 years).
Barring rainouts, and some holidays, games are played Friday evenings starting at 6 p.m., and Sunday afternoons starting at 2 p.m. at the Kapa‘a roller rink.
