A 24-year-old ‘Oma‘o man had his car taken from him at gunpoint early Monday morning in Kaumakani, and Kaua‘i police are asking for the public’s help finding the white 1996 Ford Thunderbird taken in what is believed to be Kaua‘i’s first-ever carjacking.
The ‘Oma‘o man was not injured by the other man carrying a handgun, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer. The incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Monday, at Thrifty Mart in Kaumakani.
A Koloa man called police at 3:01 a.m. to report his friend was robbed at gunpoint and his vehicle was taken by Chad Lewis, according to the KPD daily police log.
The suspect allegedly entered the victim’s vehicle and ordered the victim to drive to Lawa‘i. The victim then said he was told to get out of the car in the Lawa‘i area, and the suspect drove off in the Thunderbird, with plates KRG 874.
According to long-time residents, this is the first word of a car-jacking on Kaua’i.
The police investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Lt. Regina Ventura, 241-1680.
