Kamehameha-O‘ahu got the top seed in the Data House Division I girls softball state championship tournament that will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the University of Hawai‘i softball stadium.
Waimea, the KIF champions, will be leaving on Wednesday morning to make their bid for the state title with a 3 p.m. game against unseeded Mililani.
Second seed in the tournament is Kapolei, Lahainaluna seeded third, and Waiakea of the Big Island seeded fourth.
Heading to O‘ahu, head coach Pat Baniaga said, “If the girls can hit the ball, they should do OK. But, even if we get past the opening game, we’ll have to face the number one seeded team.”
Waimea takes with them a solid infield that has shown it can hit the ball during the KIF season. Leading the hitters are catcher Kodi Oyama and pitcher Lynette Perreira, both girls pocketing their share of homeruns and RBI during the course of the season.
Anchoring firstbase is Daeleen Perreira who has also come through with some clutch hits for needed runs, and speedsters Melissa Moreno at secondbase and Ashley Mier at shortstop are definite threats once on base.
Moani Durant, only a freshman a parent noted, anchors thirdbase and has demonstrated her ability to bang the long ball along with centerfielder Alexis Nawai.
Should Waimea get past Mililani, they face top seed Kamehameha on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. A loss to the Trojans will pit the Menehune against the loser of the Kailua/Baldwin matchup starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
