WAILUA — It’s a family affair for the Boice clan and their business Galloping Garden, which is based out of Wailua.
In June of 2001, Sally and Chris Boice began a business of delivering fresh produce baskets to the homes of island residents. Since that time, the Boice family has grown by five children, some of which provide assistance on a weekly basis.
“We want to help stock your island getaway with the freshest island produce,” said Sally Boice. “We want visitors as well as locals to taste the terrific variety of fruits and vegetables on Hawai’i and make ‘island’ eating fun and convenient.” The Boice’s purchase fresh, sometimes organic, produce from their “favorite farmers” on Kaua’i and then customize baskets, which include recipes, for island residents. “We really strive to build great relationships with our customers,” Sally said. “It’s a unique service and we saw a need for it here.”
According to the Boice’s, each basket of produce contains standard items, although people can customize their packages based on specific likes.
“Food is such a personal thing,” she said. “During our initial conversation, we try and design a basket that fits the needs of our customers.”
They currently deliver the baskets on Saturday. The deliveries occur throughout the island although Sally feels that the majority of them (right now) take place in Kalaheo.
“We deliver to your doorstep a 1.5 bushel basket of the best in fresh grown produce,” she said.
“We include fun ideas and recipes to enhance your experience of the ‘delectable’ fruit and veggies.”
The customized package includes pineapple; Sugarloaf or Golden, Organic mixed lettuce, apple bananas, avocado, Sunrise papayas, tomatoes, corn, fresh herb: basil, arugula, cilantro, or flat leaf parsley and Kaua’i citrus like rambutans or lychees and atemoya. Before starting the business on Kaua’i, the Boice’s worked in Atlanta.
Sally worked previously as a Dietitian and believes that her background was a main reason for Galloping Garden.
“I think people need to eat more fruits and vegetables for sure,” she said.
“However, the value in our service is that it is convenient, fun and it adds pleasure to people’s lives.”
