LAIE, HI — Shawn Opunui, sophomore guard for the Brigham Young University-Hawai’i, took over the national NCAA II lead in three-point field goal percentage this past week according to recently posted NCAA statistics.
Opunui, from Orem, Utah, scorches the net on 56.8 (50-88) percent of his long-range shots, and has helped the Seasiders to a 14-2 record and has the 22nd spot in the national rankings.
Opunui also ranks 26th nationally in three-pointers per game with 3.1. He is sixth in the Pacific West Conference scoring, averaging 18.9 points per game.
The Seasiders, as a team, rank second nationally in field goal percentage at 52.7 percent, 25th in three-point percentage at 40.2, and 18th in free throw percentage at 75.1. The Seasiders are also 32nd in scoring margin at 11.7.
BYUH’s junior center, Jake Chrisman, shows up on the national charts at 20th in scoring with 21.1 points per game. He is third in the PacWest in that category and second in the conference to teammate Austin Smylie, in field goal percentage with 55.9 percent. Smylie puts the ball in the basket 56.8 percent of the time, and Opunui holds down the third spot in the conference with 55.6 percent.
