Time to act is now
Aloha, to all who love Kaua’i. As we all know are island is changing. Our open lands are being replaced with malls, timeshares and million dollar homes.
Traffic is bumper to bumper on many parts of the island. In Kapa’a even the by pass headed south bound was backed up during the holiday season. If economy indicators are correct Kaua’i will be host to over one million visitors this summer. This will cause major traffic problems, frustration and test our Aloha.
With the paving over of paradise and as our traffic situation worsens tourism will suffer. As a wedding coordinator I deal with mainland tourist everyday by phone. The conversations and expectations are same. They have chosen Kaua’i for their vacation because the island is not over developed, not too touristy and friendly people.
I recently received a call from a client trying to decide which of the Hawaiian islands to spend their honeymoon on. The couple had friends who recently returned from Kaua’i who thought the island was beautiful but did complain about the traffic. It took them twenty minutes to get through Kapa’a town. Bumper to bumper. Wait till summer!
Is there any way to stop the over development of our beautiful garden island? Perhaps. I was very encouraged by the recent front page article in the Jan. 10th issue of the Garden Island newspaper. “A&B Kukui’ula project draws lawsuit threat”.
What a great idea! Mahalo, Gregg Schredder. A lawsuit based on that developers must ensure that the development will not negatively impact the property owners along Lawa’i Road in Po’ipu.
I would like to suggest that the citizens of Kaua’i and business owners associated with tourism bring our own law suite against developers who’s projects threaten our livelihood and would negatively affect our island lifestyle.
The time to act is now.
E hana mau i ka pono, a e iho mai no ka lani.
(By preserving in doing what is right, blessings will come to you from the heavens.)
EDNA SUMMERS,
Kapa’a
