Thursday’s high surf peaked early in the morning, with beaches from Kilauea to Polihale closed during the day.
Swimmers were plucked safely from Kalihiwai in the afternoon, and a kite-surfer in distress was saved near ‘Anini Beach Park, said Kalani Vierra, supervisor for the Kaua’i Fire Department’s Ocean Safety Bureau.
Surf on the North Shore reached 40-foot-face heights, dropping to around 20-foot faces in the afternoon, said Vierra.
“Terrible” conditions, with westerly winds, meant not many people took to the water on the North Shore, he said of surfing and swimming conditions.
Today, waves are predicted to decrease, and closed beaches may re-open, he said.
The decision is to be made this morning depending on conditions, he said.
