LIHU’E — The Menehune continued to roll, picking up their second win for both the varsity and JV squads as they swept the Kaua’i Red Raiders Tuesday night at the Raiderdome.
Jordon Dizon bulled his way through a tight, physical Kaua’i defense to lead the Waimea scoring with 20 points in the 56-46 win while Kaua’i’s Va’afuti Tavana topped all scorers with a game-high 22 points, Tavana getting the crowd aroused with a late-game dunk over the defensive efforts of Dizon.
Kaua’i opened strong, building a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter behind Tavana’s 11 points, but Waimea shut down the tall man in the second quarter, holding him to just a digit.
The Menehune continued to pepper the hoop, and with a minute left in the half, Akeem Allen turned the tables with a bucket for the first Menehune lead of the night.
Tavana opened the second half with a bucket that regained the lead only to have Casey Kaohelauli’i drop a pair to regain the Menehune lead that was clinched when Kaua’i’s Aren Racca fouled out late in the third quarter.
Waimea zero-ed in on Tavana with Lanikai Kanahele and Kaohelaulii double-teaming the tall Raider who was now without the protection of Racca, and on a feed from Alec Reichle, released his frustration with a dunk.
Calsen Agrade had 14 points and Dana Tayco added a dozen as the Menehune JV held off Kaua’i, 40-33.
Jeivin DeCosta led the JV Raiders with seven points followed by Jordan Cox who finished with six.
