POIPU – Kody Yamamoto may have laid down a quick loop and watch the marker snap away from his maku in the Keiki Breakaway Roping event, but the big names belonged to the girls as the Kaua’i Keiki and High School Rodeo Association kicked off 2004 with their Rodeo #3 over the weekend.
Kira Blackstad-Pimental topped the Keiki Barrel 5-8 Division as well as the Keiki Pole Bending event in that same age group while Kelii Carveiro topped the Keiki Barrel Racing in the 9-11 age group as well as topped the Keiki Pole Bending in that backet as well.
But, the boys were not to be outdone as Kalani Grace topped the Keiki Dummy Roping in the 9-11 Division with Yamamoto taking the Keiki Breakaway with a speedy 4.42 run, almost two seconds faster than second place Krstyn Vasconcelles.
In the high school competition, the battle raged between Sumiko Falque and Kristene Sugai who returned to the arena following a mishap early in the season.
Falque and Sugai battled for the 1-2 finish in the High School Barrels, Pole Bending, and Goat Tying events.
Shantell Wong came off a 3-RBI triple on the softball field Saturday to top the High School Breakaway Roping while Randy Brun placed tops in the Calf Roping as well as was on the winning team for Poo Wai U and the Dally Team Roping event, Big Islander Boots Kaapana working with Brun in the Dally Team event.
