HANAPEPE — The varsity girls contest was deadlocked 1-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the game when Waimea got a window Saturday night at Hanapepe Stadium.
In a fight for ball control, Waimea got a corner kick with Janna Soto doing the honors.
The boot sailed into traffic at the goalmouth and deflected off the foot of a Kapa‘a defender, sending the ball just wide of the goalie giving Waimea a 2-1 edge.
Kapa‘a came back to hammer away, but ran out of time in the contest that swung back and forth in a tight defensive contest.
Joanne Kaona broke the ice for Kapa‘a on an assist from Kieren Pond at the 35-minute mark for the 1-0 bulge that was broken less than five minutes into the second half as Waimea’s Malorie Hepa tipped in a shot attempt by Soto who gained control from the corner.
In the boys’ contest, Waimea fought an uphill battle for 70 minutes to take their 3-0 shutout over Kapa‘a after Jordon Dizon was red-carded at the 9-minute mark in the first half.
Dizon, who scored the first goal at the 3-minute mark, quietly left the field, but the penalty took its toll as boys coach Mecham was also excused from the bench in the appeal.
Despite the setback, the Menehune struck again as Jeffrey Kakuda sank a penalty kick at the 15-minute mark, and a Josh Cabral goal in the second half icing the win.
Chasen Sherman had two goals to lead the JV Menehune girls with Kristen Takashima icing the 3-2 win. Rancee Wilson and Sarah Steed did the Kapa‘a scores.
Matt Boldt, Gabe Roessler, and Daniel Roderick notched scores for the Kapa‘a JV boys in their 3-0 shutout over the Menehune.
