WAIMEA — The Waimea Menehune swept their KIF home opener Friday night, demolishing the Kapa’a Warrior varsity squad 87-38 following their 44-42 squeaker in the JV contest.
Clamping down the inside game, the Menehune frustrated Kapa’a’s tall men as they peppered the hoop with five Menehune finishing the night in double digits.
Casey Kaohelauli’i, named as one of King Auto Center’s outstanding student athlete just two days prior, demonstrated why he was selected as he led the Menehune scoring in the first half including nailing four three-pointers before finishing with 15 points.
Guard Jeremy Manuel topped the Menehune scorers with a game-high 17 points, garnering 11 of those markers in the third quarter.
Jordon Dizon lit up the boards for 15 game-total points, joining Manuel for the second-half offensive showing with 11 points in the third quarter.
Akeem Allen nailed a pair of treys as they picked up the lead in the fourth quarter to finish the night with a dozen points followed by Adam Aana who ended the night with 11 points, nine coming in the final frame.
The Menehune lost little time asserting their game on Kapa’a, soaring over the Kapa’a defense with a barrage from three-pointland, and frustrated the Kapa’a tall men – Ryan Cram and Amini Ta’ufo’ou, Cram fouling out in the third quarter with just four third quarter points.
Waimea squeezed the Warriors to just four field goals in the first half as they took a 39-16 lead into the locker rooms, the Kapa’a buckets coming from Leonel Calvan with two and one each from Greg Ragsac and Zac Cummings.
Ragsac added three more buckets in the final frame to finish with 11 points for Kapaa’a followed by Calvan with eight points.
Brendan McDaniels netted a game-high 21 points to lead Waimea to their 44-42 JV win.
Junnel Calipito came alive in the second half for 16 of his game-total 20 points as the Kapa’a JV erased a 29-11 halftime deficit to draw within a digit in the final 20 seconds.
The Waimea win sets up the scenario for the Tuesday night showdown at the Raiderdome when Kaua’i (1-0) hosts the Menehune (1-0) with the JV tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
