Nevada 77 – Hawaii 62
The University of Hawai’i wahine basketball team outgunned Nevada 39-34 in the second half of their game on Jan. 5, but the Rainbow dropped the contest 77-62 in Reno, NV.
April Atuaia, shooting a perfect 2-for-2 on the charity line, topped the UH scoring, finishing the contest with 16 points in the loss.
Atuaia was one of the game’s top rebounders, netting six (three defensive, three offensive) in the loss, just one shy of Jade Abele’s seven rebounds (five defensive, two offensive) in the outing.
Abele and Amy Saunders helped the Rainbow scoring effort with ten points each.
Jocelyn Macebo topped the Nevada scoring with 16 points followed by April Bankston with 14 and Talisha Quick-Rath’s 11-point contribution.
County’s 12 Under Boys kicks off
A trio of games, two at Kalaheo and one at Kilauea initiated the 2004 county’s 12 and Under boys basketball season Monday night.
Kekoa Prem and Cody Morden each notched nine points apiece as Prem led the HanaHou to a 39-26 win over Gee in Kilauea.
Kalani Brackenridge was outscored by Hino Kanahele 10-7, but Brackenridge led the Lihu’e Enforcers to a 22-21 win over Waimea in the first of two games played at Kalaheo.
Kauasi Lomu dropped ten points to lead Wailua to a 32-27 showing over the Westside Hornets in the final game of the night, the Hornets getting eight points from Bransen Agu.
Hanalei Canoe Club meeting
The annual meeting for the Hanalei Canoe Club will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10 starting at 10 a.m. at the Hanalei clubhouse.
A potluck lunch will follow the meeting.

Japan Olympic Women’s Judo Team will train in Hawai’i
The Japan Olympic Women’s Judo Team will be training in Hawai’i from Jan. 6 to 11 at the Tenri Judo Club in Nu’uanu, O’ahu.
Training sessions run from 3:30 p.m. to around 5 p.m. and are open to the public for viewing.
On Jan. 11, their final day of practice, a member, or members of the team have agreed to hold a one hour clinic for judo enthusiasts starting at approximately 6 p.m.
Head coach of the Japanese team is Yoshimura Sensei who is assisted by Kaori Yamaguchi and Toshiko Koga.
Six-time world champion Ryoko Tani and four-time world champion Noriko Ano are just two of the team’s members.
“This is almost a once in a lifetime event in Hawai’i,” said Neal Takamoto, one of Hawai’i’s judo coaches. “This is the team Japan will be sending to the Olympics in Athens in 2004.”
