KAPA’A — A near capacity crowd at the Bernice Hundley Gym watched as Kaua’i’s Futi Tavana led the Red Raiders to a sweep of the Kapa’a Warriors Tuesday night as the KIF boys basketball season got underway.
Tavana finished the night with a game-high 19 points in the 62-42 win, and also got the crowd involved in the game as he responded to Kapa’a’s Ryan Cram’s blocking, Tavana answering each block with one of his own.
Ahren Racca added ten points in the win, Racca a definite lead man in the first quarter where the Red Raiders outgunned Kapa’a 13-3. Racca had six points in that frame.
Cram, who led the Warriors with 15 points in the loss, came off the bench in the second quarter and ignited the Kapa’a scorecard by sinking eight of the Warriors’ 10 points in the 10-7 frame.
Amini Ta’ufo’ou, the Warriors’ forward, was silenced until the fourth quarter when he produced his game-total six points.
Kalen Dolor finished with nine points for Kapa’a
Kekoa Crowell, the third “tree” in the Raider arsenal finished with 12 points followed by Racca’s 10-point game total.
Nate Beralas notched 11 points to lead the Kaua’i JV to their 55-36 win over the Kapa’a JV earlier in the evening.
Jevin DeCosta, Brendon Young, and Damien Girard each added six points apiece in the Kaua’i balanced scoring attack.
Mike Lindsey, a strong factor in the paint, led the Kapa’a JV with a dozen points followed by Junnel Calpito and Kesmon Jaramillo each firing nine points.
