LIHU’E — Kevin Suga tripped, and nearly took a tumble on the basepath as he rounded firstbase with a 3-RBI double enroute to leading the Hanapepe Rivermen to a 13-1 showing Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
Suga was joined by Kelly Robinson who also whacked a 3-RBI double in the 10-run inning that broke open a 0-0 deadlock as well as retired Makaweli starter Jason Nakata.
Makaweli answered late in the game, driving Cody Dotario across the plate on an Isaac Castillo bang, but the damage was already done as Hanapepe shortened the game with three runs in the top of the seventh frame to end the contest prematurely.
Michael Yaris, the starting pitcher for Hanapepe, had the distinction of driving Suga home in the fourth inning with an RBI single before Hanapepe loaded the bases for Robinson’s base-clearing double.
Yaris finished his mound chores in five innings with no hits allowed on eight strikeouts and a pair of walks, Russell Ijima finishing the game with two hits allowed on three strikeouts.
Suga topped the Hanapepe bats with four RBI driven in, scoring twice, and finishing the day 2-for-3.
Robinson followed with three RBI in his 3-for-4 hitting performance
The day’s second contest was also shortened by the ten-run rule as Kalaheo banged out an 18-8 win over Lihu’e led by the bat of Kainoa Santos who finished the day with three RBI on a pair of doubles in his 4-for-5 showing in the batter’s box.
Kalaheo exploded for five runs in the second followed by another six digits in the third inning only to have Lihu’e answer with a 5-run fourth frame before the Kaneshiro farmers put the game out of reach in the seventh with another five runs.
Adding to Santos’ hits, Duane Miyasato drove in three runs on his 2-for-3 hitting including a double.
Garen Itamura, Keola McCallum, and Kaina McCallum each drove in a pair of runs in ther outing.
The Lihu’e bats were led by Dan Tanimoto’s 2-RBI performance on a double in his 1-for-2 showing.
Tommy Cox, Bobby Texeira and Ahren Kaneshiro each drove in a run, Texeira and Kaneshiro finishing the day 1-for-3 while Cox was 2-for-4 in the box.
Barry Kawamura suffered the loss for Lihu’e with six runs given up on six hits in one and one-third inning, walking one Kalaheo farmer and not being able to strike out anyone.
Shannon Oketani picked up the win for Kalaheo in three innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking just one Lihu’e batter.
