Bethany Hamilton of Princeville, the best known 13-year-old in the United States in 2003, is the subject of a photo by The Garden Island’s Dennis Fujimoto that’s featured in a special year-end issue of Sports Illustrated.
The photo is included in a photo essay that also features Olympic bicyclist Lance Armstrong, basketball great Michael Jordan and baseball home run king Barry Bonds.
The Hamilton photo was one of Fujimoto’s images of the girl that have been distributed around the world by the Associated Press.
Hamilton, who lost her left arm to a tiger shark while surfing on Halloween morning, is pictured as a symbol of courage by the magazine.
The photo was one of the first ones taken of Hamilton during her recovery from the attack.
Hamilton is on her way this month to Chicago for an appearance on the “Oprah” television show. The North Shore girl is also back in the water surfing on the North Shore and has plans to return to competitive surfing. She’s remains as a top-rated amateur surfer in Hawai’i based on her victories in contests held across the state prior to the attack in late October.
