HANAPEPE — The Waimea High School varsity boys took their contest 2-1 to keep the visiting Kaua‘i Red Raiders from sweeping the day at Hanapepe Stadium Saturday.
The Red Raider varsity boys outscored Waimea 2-1, but lost the contest as the first Red Raider goal was an own-goal giving Waimea the ice-breaker at the 8:15 mark in the first half.
Jordon Dizon announced the Menehune in the second half with a goal at the 1:15 mark for the 2-0 bulge.
Exchanging long balls and sweeps, Kaua‘i finally opened their colum at the 9:27 mark as Cody Kimura scored on an assist from Justin Kashiwabara to prevent a shutout.
Earlier, the Red Raider varsity girls celebrated the return of Emma Makepa-Foley from vacation as Makepa-Foley notched a hat trick (3 goals) to lead the varsity girls to an 8-1 win, Waimea’s sole score coming in the second half on a Jenny Morita penalty kick.
Amber Thronas scored twice, Shauna Tachibana sank one goal on a Holly Iloreta assist, Janee Correia sank one, and Lindsay Sugihara notched one in the win.
Auika Muragin scored twice along with Kristen Shim to lead the Kaua‘i JV girls to a 5-0 win over Waimea, Cherisse Rapozo rounding out the scoring.
Frank Speetjens notched two goals to lead the Kaua‘i JV boys to a 3-1 win over Waimea with Mikiala Cup Choy adding to the Kaua‘i effort and Seneca Burley opening the Waimea scorebooks.
