“For more than half of a century, I have painted with every imaginable medium, but my favorite is still watercolor for several reasons,” Lai said. “Its transparency and luminosity are unrivaled.”
“I find no other media that can provide the spontaneity or the instant gratification of watercolor painting,” he said. “You got to be quick in thought, and quick in action. I love spontaneity that suits my personality.”
Waihang Lai is known for his watercolor and Oriental brush painting. A signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, he also serves as president of the Kauai Watercolor Society and Kauai Oriental Art Society.
Lai is included in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in American Education. He has exhibited his works in the Orient and in many national and regional shows in the United States, including the American Watercolor Society Annual Show at Canton Art Institute, Canton, Ohio, the Watercolor USA at Springfield Art Museum, the Edward-Dean Museum, the Philadelphia Civic Center, Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona and Kauai Museum.
Lai is a graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and earned his M.A. degree in art from Claremont Graduate University in California. He has taught at Arizona State University, Tempe; Mauna Olu College on Maui, and has been teaching at Kaua‘i Community College since 1970.
