Hanalei’s Andy Irons’ dramatic, come-from-behind win of the World Championship Tour on Dec. 19 will be televised nationally on NBC (locally on channel 8) on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Coverage of the XBOX Pipeline Masters will show the drama unfold as Irons and six-time world tour champion Kelly Slater battle through their heats to reach the finals, and then the unbelievable final where the two go head-to-head with two other Australians in the mix.
O’ahu native Myles Padaca summed up the thoughts of the epic Kelly Slater-Andy Irons showdown on O’ahu, Dec. 19:
“It was a really special day, and is going to go down in the history of all the surf lore and legend books. You couldn’t ask for a better show today. I take my hat off to Andy and Kelly. It was the most spectacular thing to happen in surfing for a long time, and it feels great to be a part of it.”
The drama unfolded at the most famous surfbreak in the world, the Banzai Pipeline on O’ahu, where draining waves over a super-sharp coral reef have made and broken the dreams of surfers from around the world.
