World renowned “whale wall” artist Wyland visited the Kaua’i Children’s Discovery Museum earlier this week in conjunction with Hawai’i’s Living Reef Program.
The museum is near one of his whale wall and whale tower paintings at Kauai Village in Waipouli. Museum officials offered a free painting session as part of a statewide effort to protect and foster the state’s delicate coral reef system.
The afternoon was divided into two sessions, with tutorials and encouragement offered by Wyland.
Art supplies and materials were provided. The event aimed at helping to raise funds for the museum, a nonprofit community resource dedicated to providing learning adventures for Kaua’i’s resident and visiting families.
Wyland recently completed a four-state art and science educational tour, and shared tips with students about how to paint images of Hawai’i’s coral reef ecosystem.
“We’re happy about Wyland’s participation,” said Robin Mazor, KCDM executive director. “His wonderful humpback whale mural on the tower above our facilities inspires our keiki each time they walk through our doors,” she said.
“We really appreciate his commitment to the children of Hawai’i, and the respect he continually pays to the ocean that surrounds us.”
