Drivers heading into Lihu‘e from Kapa‘a and Puhi are finding traffic backed up in the middle of the day.
The back ups are due in part to many rental car agencies being sold out over the Christmas-New Year’s week, adding more than a normal number of visitors to the roads, plus more than the usual amount of shoppers heading into town.
Work on easing such traffic problems, which usually occur during the morning and afternoon rush hours is in the planning stage.
The state Department of Transportation is considering a mauka road among other relief plans to alleviate such traffic jams. However, work on such a project may be years away.
