California waited until the third quarter to take the lead as Adimchinobe Echemandu smashed through for a 10-yard TD with Frederickson doing the point-after honors for the 35-28 nod.
Rodgers upped the ante with a nine-yard scoring run with Frederickson’s boot giving California a 42-28 lead.
A pair of fourth quarter scores by Virginia Tech stalemated the contest with 3:11 showing as DeAngelo Hall returned a punt return 52 yards to 6-pointland, and Brandon Pace doing the point-after honors for the stalemate.
Kevin Jones, the Virginia Tech’s leading rusher, had 1494 yards and 20 TD’s leading into the Insight Bowl where he topped all rushers with 156 yards, but was held to a single TD.
