Response to DOE
In response to Mr. Sherwood Hara’s BOE Christmas Greeting Published in “The Letters to the Editor” 12-20-03.
Mr. Hara:
I take this opportunity to reciprocate our Christmas Wishes to you and your loved ones.
However in answer to your quote “we cannot base our judgment of public schools on test scores only.”
#1 The reality is that colleges across the country and state take SAT scores and results as their primary criterior for consideration in accepting our children into accredited four year colleges. #2 “Performance related to the amount of students going on to further education” – My data shows that students graduating from Kauai High Schools, that are accepted into accredited four year colleges, are in the low single digit percent of our graduating seniors. #3 Military – Mr. Hara we are at war in many places on the globe and many fine, young Americans are coming home, maimed, permanently disabled or worse in a coffin with a thank you American flag for us, their parents. Our children joining the military as fodder, due to their lack of opportunities due to their poor public school education, is not an accolade to our education system. #4 Employment – Our high school grads are leaving their home state for sub-blue collar job opportunities in droves to destinations like Las Vegas. So your assessment of our school system needs to be revisited.
In closing I’m very discontented with your Christmas message to the taxpayers and parents whose children will not be ready to compete for highly covered college opportunities for our most valued treasures. Our Children!
Happy Holidays to one and all.
