Christmas 2003
The Christmas season brings out the best in people on Kaua’i, and sometimes the worst.
Dr. Greg Naganuma and other medical worker volunteers are helping those who can’t afford dental and medical care, showing the true spirit of the season, a season of giving.
Those who supported the Zonta Club/The Garden Island drive to help provide gifts to the needy are also to be congratulated during this Christmas season. This annual program finds out exactly what presents are needed and then goes out to find donors.
The Salvation Army’s toy drive was wildly successful, too, this year, with thousands of toys distributed. Along with the Marine’s toy programs, the Angel Tree program that provides gifts to the children of prisoners located both on Kaua’i and Kauaians incarcerated in Mainland prisons, and other good Christmastime works.
Today in homes across the Island the joy of Christmas is manifest, with the opening of gifts, special meals and activities. Hopefully this spirit will last well into the New Year.
On the down side, the Church of the Pacific at Princeville suffered a vandalism attack on Tuesday to the area where they present a live Nativity scene. While the vandalism might be written off to a teenage prank, it may also be a sign of bigotry. No matter, the church’s congregation has responed well to the incident in the Christmas spirit and the Nativity scene lives on.
