KAPA’A — The Waimea Menehune scattered four in-the-park homeruns through six innings as they kept their record unblemished by downing the Kapa’a Warriors 11-1 in six innings Tuesday night at the New Kapa’a Ball Park.
Kodi Oyama led the Menehune hitters with two ITP bangs, the first opening the fifth inning and the second coming in the sixth frame to drive in Melissa Moreno who singled.
Menehune hurler Lynette Perreira started the ITP whacks in the second frame on a solo shot followed by Oyama in the fifth.
Waimea racked up two ITP’s in the sixth frame as Moani Durant opened the inning on a two-RBI shot, scoring Kanoe Carveiro who got first on a Warrior error.
But, the Warriors were not beat yet as they also brought home a run in the sixth inning as Chasare Labuguen got aboard on a walk with one out, stole second, and crossed the plate on a Shantel Wong single to rightfield.
Kapa’a catcher Theresa Taylor tried to keep the fireworks going with a double to right, but the Warriors succumbed as the next two batters flew out.
Kapa’a showed continuing improvement on the field as Labuguen held the Menehune at bay for three innings, allowing just a run in the opening frames, with the Warrior defense also showing some shining moments as they gunned down Waimea’s Daeleen Perreira at the plate in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice.
Labuguen also struck out three Menehune batters including getting out of a full-base situation in the sixth inning.
Saturday’s games move to the Waimea Canyon Park as the Menehune host the Kaua’i High Red Raiders who will attempt to redeem their earlier 6-5 loss to Waimea in nine innings.
The first pitch is scheduled to go off at noon for the double-header.
Should there be no playoffs needed for Round One, the KIF softball Round Two will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 7 when Kaua’i hosts Kapa’a at Isenberg Field starting at 5:30 p.m.
