The Garden Island and Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua’i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa’a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have merry Christmases for more than 20 years.

Elderly couple needs a stove
Kaoru and Ayako are 93 and 91 respectively. Kaoru is the caregiver for Ayako, who suffered a stroke and is no longer able to do the things she used to be able to do. Ayako is unable to eat solid food, and having a gift certificate to purchase Ensure would assist Kaoru and Ayako a great deal. Their stove has also been broken for a few months, and they are unable to purchase a new one due to financial problems. Having a new stove to enable Kaoru to cook for his wife and himself, and would be very much appreciated.
T-shirts and shorts would make Uncle Tony smile
Uncle Tony lives alone. He has no immediate family, and depends on friends to assist him. He is working on getting a caregiver to help him with his housework. Uncle Tony needs new T-shirts and shorts.
New house dress for Katherine
Katherine is an 81-year-old lady who is partially deaf. She also suffers from multiple illnesses which cause a financial hardship for her. She needs financial assistance to pay for her prescriptions. Katherine would have a nicer holiday season if she was able to get a new house dress just to brighten her day.
Auntie Gussie would love food for Christmas
Auntie Gussie is an 80-year-old woman who is wheelchair-bound and has to be on oxygen 24 hours a day. Because of these needs, her electricity bill is quite high. However, she makes sure that the bill is paid on a timely basis, which means that she has to cut corners when it comes to purchasing personal needs and food. It would be a nicer Christmas if Auntie Gussie would be able to purchase food to contribute to her family’s Christmas dinner.
