KAHULUI, MAUI — The Kekaha Pop Warner Association competed on Maui the weekend of Dec. 6-7 in the Maui Invitational Pop Warner Tournament.
Players in the Midget, Junior Pop Warner and Pop Warner divisions competed against the Wailuku Rainbows, Keiki Sabers and Kihei Dolphins.
In the Midget game, Kekaha Chargers vs Wailuku Rainbows, the Kekaha Chargers didn’t waste time, with two minutes into the game, No. 10, Jon Anthony Reyes, scored from 10 yards out, but the point after the touchdown, attempted by Quinton Nativad, was no good.
Reyes scored another touchdown from 7 yards out in the closing minute of the first quarter. Again, the point after was no good.
The only score for Wailuku came late in the first half with a 25-yard return for a touchdown on an interception. The point after was no good.
Kekaha returned the answer with a 55-yard gallop by No. 11, Kylan Gandia, in the closing seconds of the first half. The first extra point of the game, kicked by Nativad, was good. The score at the end of the first half stood at 20-6.
Kekaha came out in the second half with their second unit and marched down to paydirt with a five-yard touchdown by No. 34 Joshua Yanos, earning an extra point thanks to Nativad.
Kekaha’s final TD came when No. 3, Kailan Malama went in from about 8 yards out. The final score was Kekaha Chargers 34 and the Wailuku Rainbows 6.
The Junior Pop Warner game, Kekaha Panthers vs. Keiki Sabers, was tied at the half, with No. 11 Kalama Yorkman going into the end zone from five yards out.
In the second half, the Panthers fought hard only to fall in the in last 2 minutes of the contest. The final score was Keiki Sabers 12, Kekaha Panthers 6. This was a difficult game — because both teams were dressed in blue.
The final game, PW division, was Kekaha Seahawks vs. the Kihei Dolphins. The Kekaha Seahawks took an early lead by scoring on a fumble recovery by No. 56 Dominguez, setting up a 30-yard scamper by No. 7 Max Agor.
The point after was no good but Kekaha scored again on a 45-yard run into the end zone by No. 2, Jon Anthony Lumabao. Again, the point after was no good. Kihei came back on an untimed down, after a Kekaha penalty, at the end of the first half with a 47-yard touchdown. The point after was no good. The score at the half was Kekaha 14, Kihei 6.
In the second half, Kekaha’s final score came on a 55-yard gallop by Agor.
The Kihei Dolphins then came from behind in the final quarter, scoring 15 unanswered points, to defeat the Seahawks. The final score of this game was Kihei 21, Kekaha 18.
