LIHU’E — Kaua’i Pop Warner Association League Commissioner Leon Gonsalves, Sr. said, “All that is left is the off-island games” as the league wrapped up their 2003 season Saturday at Vidinha Stadium with a quartet of exciting games.
The Vista Buccaneers from the Palomar conference in San Diego had never lost a game in their 2003 season until they came to Kaua’i, where they fell to the Hanapepe JPW Colts 19-0 in a match that had an outnumbered Colt squad working each minute of the game to contain the Buccaneers, with Hanapepe getting two TDs from Torrey Santiago and one from Mikeo Rita in the win.
Koloa JPW Packers will be playing in Florida this weekend as they capitalized on a key Waimanalo injury to come from behind to take the Division II Regional Championship 13-12 over the visitors, Koloa scores coming from Ikaika Rapacon and Mikey Blackstad with the key point being nailed on a pass from QB Branden Scovel to Blackstad following the Rapacon TD in the third quarter.
Darren Taylor scooted for 41 yards midway through the second quarter to give Na Ali’i a winning note in their season as they blanked the Lihu’e Patriots 13-0, Taylor scoring again with just 39.5 seconds remaining in the season.
Cole Parangao and Aaron Ramos of the Hanapepe PW Colts closed the books on a successful season as they scored TDs for the Colts on their 16-0 finale over the Kapa’a Steelers, Cody Owen doing the point-after honors in the game that was called after a Colt got injured.
Kekaha Pop Warner Association will be playing on Maui this weekend, and the Lihu’e Patriots make the big wing over to Las Vegas, Nev. next weekend for the Silver Bowl, their pepsters heading to Maui for a Spirit and Cheer competition there this weekend.
