The Garden Island and Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua’i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa’a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Warm clothes are Chuck’s requests
Chuck is a 35-year-old with developmental disabilities. He has no family here, and struggles to make ends meet each month. Most of his Social Security income is used for room and board. Chuck could really use warm clothes and shoes for the winter season. He also could use a warm jacket, as he doesn’t even have one.
Money’s too tight for winter clothes
Marcy is a 25-year-old with mild mental retardation who is also developmentally disabled. Although she receives Social Security, the majority is used to help with the family’s expenses and mortgage. Marcy could use some warm clothes for the winter season.
Connie needs clothes and shoes
Connie is a 40-year-old with developmental disabilities. She lives at home with her elderly parents. Due to the family’s financial struggle, Connie does not always have adequate clothes, shoes or personal items. She would be very happy to receive clothes and shoes, as she’s picked up some weight recently and is unable to purchase clothes.
Covered shoes and new clothes for Andy
Andy is a 48-year-old with mental retardation. He lives with his father, who is elderly. His mom passed away some years ago. Andy could really use new clothes and covered shoes for the winter. Most of his clothing is old, worn, and all have holes in them.
