KAPA’A — Sanoe Keliinoi was on fire for the Lihu’e Comets, but the Kilauea Hui outgunned them, and held on to a four-point win, 22-18 Monday night at the county 14 Under Girls basketball games played at the Kapa’a High School.
Keliinoi had the 4-3 margin in hand as the buzzer sounded on the opening frame, but empty Comet frames in the second and final frames gave the nod to the Hui who were led by Kirstie Daly’s heavy traffic shooting, the forward notching 14 of Kilauea’s total 22 points.
Petite guard Sarah Tangalin added four, with Caroline Troutman and Danielle Jure each finishing with a pair apiece in the win.
Keliinoi led the Comets’ firing with 11 points, five coming in the fourth frame when the Comets ripped for an 8-2 run against the Hui.
Dolly Cubangbang finished with three, Naomi Taylor added a pair, and Kathleen Cadiente and Rachel Hamamura were each held to just a digit each.
Mai’lika Napoleon led Wailua with 10 points in their 32-12 showing over the Kapa’a Mystics in the second game of the night, the Mystics’ Rebecka Duncan leading the charge with four points.
Gabby Matayoshi added eight points for the Wailua girls who were using their noise-makers effectively at the Bernice Hundley Gym, and Hanalei Gomes’ quick moves down the side produced six points. Maegan Pablo had four first-frame points, and a pair each from Shelsie Villatora and Chanha Makanui rounded out the Wailua scorebook.
Teana Valpoon, Ella Arube and Jennalyn Gomes each fired a pair to help Duncan’s lead, and a digit from Kella Caspillo accounted for the Mystic math.
