ROCHESTER, N.Y. — PGA Champion Shaun Micheel, who thrilled the golf world with a stunning final-hole approach shot to win the 85th PGA Championship on Augu. 17 at Oak Hill Country Club, has earned the final berth at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Micheel’s victory marks the first time that four first-time major champions have competed in the event.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf originated in 1979 at Oak Hill Country Club.
The 2003 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which brings together the winners of the year’s four major championships in a 36-hole stroke play event, is Dec. 5-6 at Poipu Bay Golf Course & Hyatt Regency Kaua’i Resort & Spa.
Micheel, who finished with a 72-hole total of 4-under-par 276, joins Masters Champion Mike Weir, U.S. Open Champion Jim Furyk, and British Open Champion Ben Curtis in the elite foursome.
Poipu Bay Golf Course, and the Hyatt Regency Kaua’i Resort & Spa mark their 10th consecutive year in hosting the winners of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship. The two-day, 36-hole event features a $1,000,000 purse.
Last year’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf saw Tiger Woods capture the annual showdown of major champions for a fifth straight time with a tournament and course record of 11-under-par 61.
He finished with a record 17-under-par 127 to win by 14 strokes over Justin Leonard and Davis Love III. PGA Champion Rich Been finished fourth.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which has the most difficult qualification in the game, is televised to some 86.7 million U.S. homes by TNT Network, and to more than 100 countries worldwide.
