KAPA’A — Approximately 700 people from Kaua’i, throughout Hawai’i and the Mainland attended the Otsuka’s Furniture and Appliances annual Invitation-only Private Sale on Nov. 21.
“It was insane and we are still recovering from it,” said Jeff Hayes, the General Manager of Store Operations. “But when you compare it to past private sales, it was unbelievably smooth.”
Those that attended the “customer appreciation” event were treated to a dinner and low prices on merchandise at the store.
“It was our way to say thank you to the public that have supported us for many years,” Hayes added.
Otsuka’s provided, among other things, approximately 400 pounds of sirloin steak and 250 pounds of Babyback ribs for the dinner which went from 5-9 p.m.
“The food was unbelievable,” said Hayes.
“The whole event was pretty amazing. The one comment that kept coming up was the family atmosphere here. We had lots of families that helped contribute (to the event).”
Otsuka’s had its beginnings in 1935 as a new car agency selling Studebaker automobiles.
It was founded by two brothers, Wallace Y. Otsuka and Jay J. Otsuka.
After WWII, they added general merchandise, furniture and appliances.
Automobiles were eventually phased out and the company concentrated on furniture and appliances.
After a fire destroyed the original store in 1991, a new, modern and larger building was built over the same ocean-front location approximately eight years ago.
The new store has 27,000-foot on two levels with “an impressive selection of furniture, appliances and accessories.”
