Char Ravelo was restless last year.
She needed to find a new project that would give her inspiration and help fill a void.
“I was searching for a way to give back to the community of Kaua’i for all of the Aloha I have received over the years,” Ravelo said.
Her intense search went on until she found that inspiration in November of 2002.
While on the Mainland in Michigan, Ravelo read a popular holistic magazine entitled, the “Healing Garden Journal.”
She noticed several significant aspects of the magazine. However, one of the biggest was the editorial content.
From that journal, Ravelo received a new-found spirit and purpose.
She then set out to create her own periodical that would be “filled with holistic articles pertinent to daily life.”
In May of 2003, Ravelo’s dedication and determination became reality when the inaugural edition of “Inspiration” was published.
“We (people on Kaua’i) don’t have material dedicated to inspiration and education,” said Ravelo. “For the average person here, I wanted to offer this for the community.”
According to Ravelo, Inspiration is designed to “serve as a vehicle for holistic healers, health, organic and natural living, social and environmental professionals throughout Hawai’i to share their knowledge.
“We believe in cultivating an understanding of the body, mind and spirit in an effort to encourage the exploration of inner peace, harmony and balance.”
Ravelo utilizes content from island professionals who write stories, editorials and offer insight about the field.
“I wanted to have strong editorial content from professionals on Kaua’i that could offer their expertise and write what they are passionate about,” she said.
“Inspiration is article driven. Each issue provides stimulating, motivating and provocative information to move your body to either get up and dance or to sit quietly and listen to the music within yourself.”
The first edition of Inspiration generated 5,000 copies that were mailed (free of charge) to subscribers on the island, throughout Hawai’i and on the Mainland.
The most recent edition generated 10,000 copies.
“We will continue this increase to become the leading publication for holistic living on all the islands,” she said.
Ravelo is the Publisher of the Journal and is helped by a talented cast of local Kama’aina.
Those individuals include Editor Patricia Morin, Designer Adam Prall and Advertising agents Dave Armstrong and Tammi Andersland.
“What is so exciting for us (the staff) is how well we are doing and how it has been received,” Ravelo said. “I have been stunned by the reception that we have received.”
