A Koloa man died Thursday after falling between 600 and 1,000 feet in Koke‘e during a hunting expedition. He was identified as Anthony “Antone” “Tony” Balocan, a resident of Koloa and 21-year employee of the county Department of Public Works.
A Koloa man died Thursday after falling between 600 and 1,000 feet in Koke‘e during a hunting expedition. He was identified as Anthony “Antone” “Tony” Balocan, a resident of Koloa and 21-year employee of the county Department of Public Works.
“We will miss Tony,” said Ladye Martin, deputy county engineer. “His 21 years of service to the County of Kaua‘i is greatly appreciated. Our sympathies and condolences go out to his family,” she said.
Gary Heu, administrative assistant, echoed Martin’s sentiments. “This is a tragic incident and loss that will be felt by many of us within the county,” Heu said. “During this difficult time our prayers will be with Tony’s family and friends.”
Balocan’s body was recovered by Kaua‘i Fire Department rescue personnel, assisted by a pilot from Inter-Island Helicopters, at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Fire rescue specialist Tim Stokesbary said the victim was deceased by the time rescue personnel reached him. He appeared to have a massive head injury.
