The Garden Island and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua‘i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua‘i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa‘a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Mary needs a warm blanket
Mary Cline is a 78-year-old senior who lives alone in public housing. She has a limited income from Social Security, and receives public assistance. She has severe medical problems, and is on continuous oxygen. She does not have contact with her family on the island, and does not socialize very much due to her health problems.
Her financial situation prevents Mary from buying such crucial items as a new blanket to keep her warm during the winter season, or some new clothing. She would appreciate any help she can get.
Groceries would make Steve happy
Steve Bow lives alone, and is 79 years old. He faces financial challenges, having to pay for bills and accumulated debts, and not having enough to pay for utilities and food. Whatever income he has goes toward paying his debts, and he has been given numerous notices that his utilities will be terminated. Unfortunately, he does not qualify for government assistance.
Because of his bleak financial situation, his holiday season would be brighter with a gift certificate to purchase groceries.
Gift certificate would ease Audrey’s tight budget
Eighty-five year old Audrey has lived alone for many years. She has always been very independent, and able to do most things on her own until recently. Due to unforeseen medical problems, she is now having a difficult time doing things for herself. Audrey already lives on a tight budget, and now having to pay for additional medications her budget is even tighter. She would really appreciate a gift certificate to purchase needed household items.
Tough times cause hardship for young family
Catherine and Dale have tried to make ends meet. This year, due to the poor economy, Dale has been laid off from work six times. This has caused such an impact on the family financially. Catherine would like to be able to buy bikes for two older children, and a few small things for the younger ones. A nice meal will really brighten their festivities.
